Magnificent Maldives: A Little Slice of Heaven

The Maldivian islands have always been on my travel bucket list, so my husband and I were lucky enough to make the trek for the first time back in November of 2018.  And I’m here to report: yes, it’s everything you could imagine.  And yes, it’s definitely worth the hype.  The stretches of white sand shores, the turquoise crystal clear waters, breathtaking scenery, awe-inspiring underwater spectacles and wonderful weather are just a few of the reasons why the Maldives is my new favorite tropical destination.

Places to see in Male

Travelers to the Maldives often have long layovers in Male due to the fact that the seaplanes only operate in the daytime and most flights coming in and out are red-eyes.  So it makes sense to have some things to do lined up in Male.  Although no larger on the map than a few ink splashes, the Maldives actually has many places of tourist’s attraction. Take, for example, the magnificent National Museum in Male. Known for its exclusive and antique collection of things, this is the place every history buff should visit. You can also stop by some religious places in the Maldives like the Grand Friday mosque, which is the biggest mosque of the country and Hukuru Miskiiy, considered to be the oldest mosque in the Maldives.  The fish market in the Male is another major tourist attraction. You can visit the fish market just to see the different fish products or if you’re interested in catching fishes, you can also spend your leisure time fishing after the sunset.

Things to do

Of course, you can spend some leisure time on the sun-kissed palm-laced beaches, but you can do that in any other world-class beach destination -- right? What you should really explore in Maldives is Maldives’ unique and admirable underwater beauty, underwater restaurants and vast natural coral reefs. Witnessing the water life so close and so personal is something very sensitizing to the nerves and senses. You can get a kick out of other water sports activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, underwater coral watching and water scooters as well.

Resorts

Making sure you have a pleasant stay, there are a great number of tourists' resorts in the Maldives which will offer you a surreal experience.  Grand and glamorous, the W Maldives is my top choice. The resort has beautifully appointed, modern villas with breathtaking, picturesque views of the ocean. If you’re a little tight on budget, but don’t want to cut back too much on the grandeur, Angsana or the Sheraton are other options you can consider. The resort is best known for its spa procedures and astounding villas overlooking the sea.

My next pick—and it’s really a tie because my two favorites are both so amazing—is The Residence. Located in the Falhumaafushi Atoll, it’s one of the furthest resorts to get to but worth the travel.  Secluded in the nearly southernmost atoll of the Maldives, the expanse is incredible.  You won’t be seeing any other resorts off in the distance, nor will you see passing commercial tankers or planes. And being one of the larger resorts, The Residence does offer an ample range of recreational activities like diving, fishing, kayaking, and snorkeling...What else could you possibly need?

The Food

The Maldives has a lot of restaurants and eat-out centers offering authentic continental and delicious seafood. Local seafood constitutes the maximum part of the meal. There are specific eating joints located in different parts of the country. You can enjoy having your food in an underwater restaurant. This can be a completely breathtaking experience for you. Cooked in the best possible manner, the traditional dishes in the Maldives are a new gastronomical experience.

The Maldives can offer you a lifetime of memories. The place is still not under urban influence overall, so you get the feel of paradise as serenity prevails all over. So, when are you heading to this wonderful travel destination?
